Welcome to the National Office for Evangelisation, Australia

Thank you for visiting the National Office for Evangelisation website.

Our mandate

Our mandate from the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference initiates from the words of Pope Paul VI:

“For the Church, evangelizing means bringing the Good News into all the strata of humanity, and through its influence transforming humanity from within and making it new: "Now I am making the whole of creation new." [Rev. 21:5; cf. 2 Cor 5:17; Gal 6:15.] But there is no new humanity if there are not first of all new persons renewed by Baptism[cf Rom 6:4] and by lives lived according to the Gospel.[Cf. Eph 4:24-25; Col 3:9-10.] The purpose of evangelization is therefore precisely this interior change, and if it had to be expressed in one sentence the best way of stating it would be to say that the Church evangelizes when she seeks to convert, [Cf. Rom 1:16; 1 Cor 1:18, 2:4.] solely through the divine power of the message she proclaims, both the personal and collective consciences of people, the activities in which they engage, and the lives and concrete milieu which are theirs.”
(Pope Paul VI, Evangelii Nuntiandi, n18)

Our role

The National Office for Evangelisation acts as a national base for Catholic evangelisation, and seeks to liaise with different dioceses and groups within the Catholic Church in Australia that are involved in sharing the Good News. From this base, it shares information about successful outreach initiatives around the country, including diocesan-based agencies for the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults, for those wanting to formalise their relationship with the Catholic Church. It also seeks to give dioceses and groups access to sufficient resources and training opportunities to empower and encourage them in effective evangelisation.

It is important to note, however, that the National Office for Evangelisation does not claim to be the only evangeliser, and truly it is incapable of doing all the evangelisation work that there is to be done. Its purpose however, is to connect with and support groups who are already getting their hands dirty with the work of evangelisation, to provide resources to assist in the work of evangelisation and to encourage and empower others to take up that work alongside them.
